What is Umbrella Insurance?

"I have plenty of insurance"

"That's why I hire you, to make sure I have enough coverage"

"Shouldn't my current policy protect me?"

"I'd never use that!"

You would be surprised to find out how quickly you can exhaust your insurance limits. Especially now in 2020. Medical expenses are higher, the cost to replace a vehicle or even parts of a vehicle has increased. The chances of a claim or lawsuit exceeding your policy limits are slim, but it is not unlikely to occur. Let's check out a couple of examples to see if we can break this down.

1. You are driving down the road and texting while driving. You are rapidly approaching a construction zone. You notice too late and have to slam on your breaks to avoid hitting the cars in front of them. This distracted decision causes a ten car accident. The property damage coverage on your insurance policy is not high enough to replace all 10 victims' vehicles. Nor are your personal liability limits high enough to pay for the medical bills.

2. Your dog escapes your fenced in backyard. It has a fear of bicycles and sees your neighbor cruising by on one. Your dog runs your neighbor down, attacks the bike, causing the your neighbor to crash. Before they could safely get away they were attacked. Your neighbor sues you to cover their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering due to the incident.

Both of these examples were unexpected and I am sure that in both cases, the insured thought they had enough insurance to protect them in the event of any accident.

We don't want this to happen to you. Let's look at what an umbrella policy will do.

Umbrella insurance is a type of personal liability insurance that can be indispensable when you find yourself liable for a claim larger than your homeowner's insurance or auto insurance will cover.

An umbrella policy is an extra layer of insurance to be there... on a rainy day.
