Renters Insurance Mini-Series: Renters Liability

This week we are back with round three in our mini series!

The topic of this week's blog is a pretty important one, renters liability.

What does renters liability cover?

Personal liability coverage is part of a standard renters insurance policy. It may help pay for another person's medical bills or repairs to their property if you're found legally responsible for their injuries or property damage.

Lets go over a couple of scenarios that will help better explain what renters liability will help protect.

  • SCENARIO 1: Your dog is outside in the fenced in backyard. Someone rides by on their bicycle. Your dog is terrified of bicycles and found a way to get out of the fence. They attack the bicycle and while attacking the bicycle, they nip the rider in the leg. The rider ends up crashing the bicycle in an attempt to escape from your dog. The rider ended up with a dislocated collar bone and three stitches from the dog bite. Your renters liability insurance will help cover cost of the medical expenses incurred by the rider due the injuries from your dog.
  • SCENARIO 2: Your kids are outside playing toss when things get a little out of hand. They decide they are going to take some batting practice and when one of them hits the ball off the baseball tee the ball misses the practice net and flies through your neighbors window. Your renters liability insurance will help cover the costs of the damages your neighbor incurred from the ball flying through their window.

Renters liability helps protect you as the tenant just as liability insurance on a homeowners policy would help protect the homeowner should one of these two scenarios above occur on their property.
